Deadly 60 Down Under

It's not often that a celebrity comes to town especially one you're quite fond of.  Cody is a big fan of Steve Backshall and his show the Deadly 60.  He was thrilled to see Steve live on stage and of course, it's heaps more fun with friends!

Cody and Hayden are both turning 10 this month,
so this was a bit of an early birthday present!

Checking out their new Deadly 60 books.

Great show, Steve!  Thank you for inspiring our kids!

My Zookeeper

In January Cody discovered Wild Kratts, and his love for animals has grown.  After visiting the Territory Wildlife Park in Darwin, he has decided to become a zookeeper when he grows up.  He is constantly reading books about animals and watching animal documentaries.  He loves The Deadly 60 right now.  He has all these incredible facts about animals memorised.  Ask him anything!

He is also in Scouts this year.  He is really loving this as well.  It's a bit out of his comfort zone because he's homebody, but he's having fun and looking forward to a camp coming up.  Now if I can just get him interested in his actual school work.

Happy 8th Birthday, Cody!

It's hard to believe my little guy is 8 years old.  I'm afraid to blink for fear he'll be 18 and moving out.  Although, he has assured me he will just be moving out to the back yard.  I'm so blessed to be his momma.

He loves animals, and thanks to Wild Kratts he is fascinated with learning more about animals all over the world.  His sister made him this fun cake with a waterfall and animal droppings included!

We had a little bbq with some of his friends.

Here is a photo of him at every birthday.

Someone please freeze time,
I don't want to miss a moment.

Happy 7th Birthday, Cody!

7 years ago there I held this adorable baby in my arms,
then in a blink of an eye...
this happened.

We discussed this whole growing up thing, and each birthday he tells me it's his last, but they keep happening!  He told me today that he will go to 10 and then that is it!

We decided to have him a birthday party at our local YMCA's roller rink.  We had such a great time!  Cody wanted to do a Mario Brothers/Kart theme.  So, thanks to Pinterest, I had lots of great ideas!

Cody with his friends.

I made Mario mustaches with straws for the drinks,
then wrote the child's name on the opposite side to help keep track of drinks.
It worked great!

Even the big kids had fun!

Happy Birthday, kiddo!
I love you to the moon and back.

First Day of (Home) School! Meet the Kids!

Today was our first day back to school!

I love starting fresh with new books, new supplies, and a clean house!

I'm joining Our Worldwide Classroom for the Aussie (Not) Back to School Blog Hop.
This week's theme - Meet the kids.

My favourite photos of the kids are the ones on my blog header,
but here are photos taken today on our first day of school.

My 7th grader.  Wow!  How did this happen?!  It dawned on me while preparing for this school year, that I am halfway through the school years with her.  A little bit about her: she loves anything outdoorsy - climbing trees, hiking, catching snakes with dad, and so on.  She wants to be a missionary when she grows up, and has a burden for Africa.  On her own, she has been studying Swahili.  She helps us with church services on the Indigenous community, and is chomping at the bit to teach Sunday School.  She also enjoys drawing and writing stories.

My second grader.  He is definitely a momma's boy, but loves doing "man" things in the garage with daddy.  He recently got his first tool box and has organised it just so...hmmmm...wonder where he gets that from!  He loves cars and planes, shooting his bow, racing his RC car around the yard, riding his bike, and cuddling to read a book.  He's a bit of a homebody like his mum.

For the first day of school I made pancakes and bacon.
Not sure if you can see from the photo,
but the pancakes are in the shape of their grade.
We had a great first day back to school, I'm looking forward to a great year!

Behold, now is the day of salvation...

Cody accepted Christ as his own personal Savior.

Glory to God!

He's been asking a lot of questions the past few weeks.  Tonight we read a beautiful book about Heaven, and he had even more questions.  Then he said, "Mommy, will you pray with me to ask Jesus to come into my heart."  I've never heard more precious words.  My heart is full.  Thank you, Jesus.

A Boy and his Bike

Patrick found this bicycle at the tip (dump).  Cody had a smaller bicycle with training wheels, but he got on this new (to him) bike and was riding without training wheels in a matter of seconds!  He loves it!

The Australian Scouts - Cody

This past week Cody had his investiture into scouts.

Now, anyone who knows Cody well will see something unusual about the photo above.  Yes, he is wearing a collared shirt.  This boy hates collared shirts.  Ever since he was young he would just cry.  I have a picture from when he was 2 on Easter Sunday, he was in tears because he had to wear a little suit.  For nearly 6 years he has rarely worn a shirt with a collar.  We really had to make a fuss over this shirt.  When he first saw it, he cried!  Crazy kid.  Anyway, he got over it and dressed himself for scouts this past week and I was very proud of him.

Please pass on your parenting lectures, I've learned to pick my battles with my kids, and forcing them to wear something they don't like isn't a battle I feel is important.  Teaching them to love others as Christ loves us, that's my priority.

Cody's 6th Birthday!!

Seriously, where does the time go?  My baby turned 6 today, that's my warning for a weepy mommy post.  I love this kid so much, and it makes me a bit sad thinking another year has passed.  I tell him every year that this is his last birthday, no more growing for him.  I love just watching him play by himself, or watch him interact with people, or watch him when he doesn't think I'm around like at Scouts or at a friend's house.  He's a good kid, he still loves to give cuddles, he's a bit shy, and a bit more sensitive than his daddy would like, but I'm ok with that!

Today after his party, he asked me if we had any more presents for him.  I told him no, and that we gave him all his presents.  And he says, you're forgetting one, and he comes over and offers me his cheek to kiss.  He's always doing things like this.  Reminding me if I've forgotten to give him his good morning hug or bedtime hug.  When we're sitting on the couch he will snuggle up to whomever is closest and put his arm around them.

Today we had a little birthday party for him.  He loves Disney Planes, so we did a plane theme.  I had someone make his cake for me (what a stress reliever!).  The kids had a blast throwing water balloons, swimming in the pool, making paper airplanes, and then sitting and watching the Disney Planes movie.  It was a great afternoon.

Sigh.  Can I just freeze time?  I really do try to soak up every moment with my kids, but time is just flying by.  I just pray that they remember all the fun days like today, and forget all my messy mommy moments.

10 Reasons I Homeschool

1. I believe God wants me to homeschool my children.

2. I enjoy having my children home with me.
Yes, I really do!

3. My children are able work at their own pace.

4. My children learn in a relaxed environment.

5. I have control over the choice of my children's friends,
as opposed to them being in a school setting where I don't know their classmates or their parents.

6. My children are best friends (for the most part!).

7. I don't want strangers teaching my children.

8.  I enjoy the one-on-one time with them.

9.  I love learning along side my children.

10.  I love having my family altogether!

He Lost Tooth #2!

Cody James - 5 years old

This past week Cody lost his second tooth.  He was sitting watching a movie with us and it just fell out!  He got $5 from the tooth fairy (aka - mom), and he spent it on Legos.

When I asked him if he saw the tooth fairy, he just giggled at me.  Somehow I think he's knows!  I asked him if she was pretty.  He said, "yes".  Love this kid!

Happy 5th Birthday, Cody!

How is it possible that he is 5 years old today?  He is the sweetest boy.  Always full of hugs and kisses.  Sometimes he will come up to me and say, "Hey mom, I forgot something" or "Mom, I have your favorite thing" and then he will give me a hug and kiss.  He loves to pick me flowers and draw pictures.  He still loves his Lightning McQueen cars, but is starting to branch out into Legos, Angry Birds and Star Wars (although he thinks Star Wars is a type of Lego).   I seriously can't get enough of his cuteness, come on look at those eyes!  I have told him this is his last birthday, he must remain 5 forever.

A Day in the Life of a Four Year Old

Cody turned four in February.
He is 100% boy.
He keeps this mum busy!
My husband drew this drawing of Cody.
So Cody decided to look like it!
He loves tools and working on things.
He says, "I wanna be like daddy."

He is always full of one-lines.  He loves to us that we're his best friend.  Which is the cutest thing.  A few weeks ago, I found some pee on the floor.  I called him over and asked him why there was pee on the floor.  He said he didn't know.  I asked him if he knew who peed on the floor.  He said (with his finger tapping his mouth) "Why would daddy do something like that?"  It took everything I had to not burst out laughing.  I kept it under control and corrected him for lying.  But it was so funny!

My little man's shenanigans...

My little man has been sick since yesterday.  When I say sick, I don't count a runny nose as sick.  I guess I consider my kids sick when they are coughing a lot or puking.  My kids don't get sick too often.  In fact, I can't remember the last time Autumn was sick.

Anyway,  Cody has had a runny nose for a few days, but he woke up this more coughing.  Cody stopped napping last summer when we were living on the Navajo reservation.  We were just too busy, so naps didn't happen.  So, for Cody to nap, it means he's sick.

Although he's been sick, that hasn't stopped him from getting into EVERYTHING.  Seriously, I can't turn my head for a second.  I thought I'd write out some of the things he has gotten into just the past few days.  I may need this list one day when he's older.

Shenanigans, noun.
1.  mischief, prankiness,
  • He keeps taking the mattress off his bed.  I really have no idea why.  He keeps getting into trouble for it, but he keeps doing it.  I'm trying to figure out if he's trying to make a fort or something.
  • Emptying the dog food bowl all around the house, so our dog can "eat there when he's hungry".  Like in our hallway, by the front door, beside the couch, in his bed.  I guess Cody is just trying to help the dog out.
  • He dumped his rice bucket all over his bedroom floor.  I filled a little bucket up part way for him to play with his little dumpster trucks.  Normally he plays with it on the kitchen floor or outside, but he snuck it back to his bedroom.
  • Took spaghetti in his bedroom.  We have a big rule of no food in the bedrooms.
  • He sprayed down his bicycle with WD-40.
  • Got into our bathroom and sprayed himself down with hairspray.
  • Also while in our bathroom, got into Patrick's hair gel and smeared it all over himself and the counter.
  • He pulls out the bottom drawer of our dresser and climbs to the top to get into my jewelry box.  Again, no idea why.
This list could probably go on, but it's all I can remember at the moment.

I thought I'd also share some of his cute sayings.
  • "I want my teeth to fall out so I can get some money.
  • Cody lifted Patrick's shirt the other night and said, "I want hair on my belly when I grow up."
  • I found Cody in our bathroom lifting up his shirt trying to apply deodorant.  When I asked him what he was doing he said, "Daddy does it.  I want to be like daddy."
  • He likes to tell people, "You're my best friend."
  • Or when he's in trouble, "I'm really, really sorry."  Because just one really apparently isn't enough.
Again, the list could go on, but it's all I can remember at the moment.  I need to write this stuff down more often!  Uh, oh, he's up from his nap, let the chaos begin!

Poor Missionary Kid?

I've heard people say before that missionaries are making sacrifices.  Missionary kids, even more so.  Oh, those poor missionary kids.  I recently read this  quote by David Livingston, "If a commission by an earthly king is considered an honor, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice."   Yes, my kids live 13,000 miles away from their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends.  But we are exactly where God wants us.  I remember when I first told my dad that I was dating a man that had been called to Australia's Outback.  I asked him what he thought.  He said, "I would rather you live in the middle of Australia's Outback in God's will, then live next door out of God's will."

Some days it is difficult to not have family living close by, to not go to Cracker Barrel with my dad and brothers Sunday after church, or run to Wal-Mart and get everything you need in one trip.  But, oh how the blessings outweigh those little conveniences!  My kids have seen more of this world in the last few years than most adults have seen in their entire lifetime.  They have opportunities everyday to serve the Lord and serve others.  I do not want my children to feel special because they are missionary kids, I want them to feel honored that God chose us.  I've met some grown missionary children that have a sense of entitlement, like we owe them something.  This may be because people were constantly telling them how much they had to give up, and how sorry they were for them to have to grow up on foreign soil.  Not all missionary kids are like this, but I have met some that are.

I want my children to grow up with a desire to serve the Lord, whether we were living in America or here in Australia.  We were given a special call to come here to Australia, we are blessed.  There are children here in Australia that have lived here their entire lives.  No one thinks they're making a great sacrifice.  What sacrifices did we make to come here?  To live the American dream?  Well, we're living the Australian dream!  The Lord has blessed us with a nice home, my kids each have their own rooms (something they didn't have in the states, they shared a room), we have a nice Jeep (something my husband loves), and we have a dog (another thing we didn't have in the states).  So, if anything we were sacrificing while living in the states!  I am blessed.  My kids are blessed.  God has been so very good to us.

So, I said all this to say this...don't feel so sorry for my kids...be jealous!  Ha!  Just kidding, well, a little.  :)  Seriously, my kids do miss their friends and family.  They get homesick.  I get homesick.  But like Paul said in I Timothy 1:12, "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry."  The times I do get homesick, I think of Heaven.  What a short time we get here on earth to spend serving the Lord and "sacrificing" for Him, but I will get all eternity to worship God and spend with my family in Heaven.  It's only a brief moment in time we have here on earth, and I pray my life will be used to further the Kingdom of Heaven for His name's sake.
