Walking with the Waodani - Home School Adventure Co. {Homeschool Review}

Home School Adventure Company

Walking with the WaodaniI'm excited to share with you the newest study from Home School Adventure Co. It's called Walking with the Waodani by Stacy Farrell.  The amazing story of Jim Eliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCulley, Pete Fleming, and Roger Youderian, has always been a favourite of mine.  A few years back I had the privilege of meeting Steve Saint, Nate Saint's son. Along with my family, we got to watch him perform the bucket drop in a Piper Cub.  It was a great day and a memory I won't soon forget.  So when I was given the opportunity to do a the preview version of a unit study called Walking with the Waodani, I jumped on it!

The complete 7-week study will soon be available for you to download as a PDF file.  It is a fun and fascinating study of the Waodani (formally known as the Aucas) and of Ecuador.  My preview version had 2 lessons.  The lessons are divided into 5 components - 1. Lesson Introduction, 2. People and Places, 3. Meals and Markets, 4. Animals and Argiculture, and 5. Worlds and Worldview.  The study also includes a Travel Journal for each lesson, and it is also divided into 5 components - 1. Travel Journal Notebook Pages, 2. Mark your Map (or Ministry), 3. Rate the Recipe, 4. Mark your Map, and 5. Creativity Unleashed.

You can do the study in your own time frame.  I found doing one lesson one week and the Travel Journal the next week was a good timetable for us.  The lesson components are one page, so you could read 1 page a day.  Then the following week do one component each day of the Travel Journal. You could easily do both parts in a week's time. It is not a time consuming study, but it's very enriching.

In this unit study you and your child will learn geography, history, creative writing, cultural studies, and so much more!  This is one aspect I love about unit studies is that not only can you do them with your children as a group (even at all different ages), but they cover so many subjects.

The unit study is geared toward middle/high schoolers, but my 9 year old enjoyed doing it with us.  He especially enjoyed learning about the Palmetto Weevil Grub (photo on right).  Which we have the Witchetty Grub here, so we could relate, although we've never tried one!

I am looking forward to the complete unit study. Watching End of the Spear will be a great reward as we complete it.

If you love missionary biographies you will love this unit study.  Living overseas, I find it's one thing to breeze through a book about about a person's life, it's another thing to study out their living condition, their surroundings, their menu!  I feel this study has done an excellent job giving you a peak into the life of the Waondani!

Check out Home School Adventure Co. for more great studies.  Last year we did a great Scripture memory course on Philippians.

I'd have to be *really* hungry to eat those bugs. At least, if I was starving, they're nice and big. LOL
