When we moved into our home, it was the same deal. There was sheet of that tacky, cheap looking vinyl that you buy by the roll. It wasn't even tacked down either. However, it did make it easier to remove and clean underneath in order to lay the new floor. I really like the color you chose. It looks a lot better.
