"And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left; to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel."
Deuteronomy 17:18-20
Last year we were visiting a friend's church and they mentioned that they were writing out the Scriptures. I made a mental note, but nothing more. Awhile back I was reading through some blogs, and one blogger mentioned that she was writing out the Scriptures, and I remembered my mental note.
After a month of telling myself I need to start this, I finally bought a little notebook and started writing out the book of Philippians. I write out a few verses each day during my devotions. Sometimes just one verse, sometimes several.
This idea of writing out the Scriptures comes from Deuteronomy (I typed out the verse above for you). If the kings of old were required to do it, why shouldn't I?
You can read the Bible, but when you write out each individual word of the verse, it stays with you so much more. I notice a lot more, and of course, it causes me to slow down and pay attention.
My daughter hates her Abeka copywork, so I decided to have her write out the book of Proverbs for her copywork instead. She hasn't complained once. Each day during school she writes out 2-3 verses of Proverbs.
I'm not saying this is for everyone, but I had never thought of this until a friend told me she was doing it. So, maybe this will encourage someone to write out the Scriptures themselves. Then you, too, can have a new title...scribe.

This is something I had also just made a note and continued on with my life. Now, here you are with the reminder. Thank you.
This is so interesting. We are missionaries in South Korea and about 2 years ago we went to a funeral. At the viewing displayed along with all the flowers was several notebooks where she had written out the entire Bible. I was so in awe that she had done this. Her son and his wife are one of the most faithful Korean couples we've known. What a testimony!
Glad you are enjoying it!
Hi Jen, So glad I found your place in the blogosphere! I love to write out scripture, too! I actually am doing a little Psalm 119 Calendar Makeover project I bet you would like! I write out each Chapter (8 verses) on one calendar page of a small old stand up desk calendar... you can also do this with Proverbs. It's fun and I can also display the verses. I have some examples on my Facebook page! Following you, now- stop by some time!
Hi!
I have just started doing this recently, and I am loving it! I am also finding that God's word is sticking better inside my head. Also the kids and I are reading what I have written down, and I feel so much more equipped to really teach them what God's word is saying! It has been a huge blessing in my home, AND homeschool!
