Victus Study Skill {TOS Crew Review}

I am so pleased to share this review with you today of the Victus Study Skills System.  I was given the Teacher Edition and Student Workbook to review through The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew.  This product is recommended for children in grades 5-12, but can be adapted for younger ages.  I used it with my daughter who is in 6th grade.  Although I had to explain a few things to her, I felt it was very applicable for her.

My children do well in school, but one thing I was noticing especially as my daughter gets older is that knowing how to study doesn't necessarily come naturally.  I know how to study, but found it a bit difficult explaining to her ideas how to study efficiently and effectively.   The Victus Study Skill System was exactly what we needed.

I am a very organized person.  I love lists.  I love schedules and routines.  I love making goals.  This study systems really expounds on those areas.  I knew a lot of things this book taught, but I learned some new things as well.

Here is a little breakdown of the system:

Victus is Latin for "a way of life".  Their aim is "to equip the student for success in academics and in life."  They are not just giving study tools, they "are teaching concepts that students will apply to academics and to life."  I love this because I don't want to just teach my daughter academics, but also life skills that she will use later in life.

The Victus Study Skills System shows the importance of setting goals, time management, making a weekly schedule, and more.  They system teaches how to study efficiently, where to study, how to take notes, how to keep things organized, etc.  It really is a great product for someone who is in need of learning how to get themselves organized to study or for someone who just need guidance in how to proficiently study for a test.

There are 10 Lessons.  Each lesson has at least one 'assignment' for the student.  It is important to do the lessons in order, as they build upon each other.  Most lessons took us about 30 minutes. 

The Victus Study Skills System Concepts:

1. Zeal without knowledge is not good, but zeal with knowledge bears fruit.

2. Results come from the process.

3. Any system with all of its components must have an aim, or purpose.

4. A unique and effective system of study has the greatest likelihood of aiding in success.

Three foundational questions are asked throughout the course:

1. Where are you now?  (Lessons 1 & 2)

2. Where do you want to be?  (Lesson 3)

3. How do you get there?  (Lessons 4-10)

We used the Victus Study Skills System for about 2 weeks and are just about finished with the workbook.  I went through each lesson with her.  Autumn already was setting her goals each day for school, but the course showed her how to also plan her day.  In which we made a schedule and she has been going by it this week.  I find children work much better with a schedule and routine.  She has also found a better study environment, free of distractions.  She has taken 2 tests this week and gotten 100% and I credit that to her new study skills.  This was without my helping her study, she did it all on her own.

I also appreciated the lesson on note taking.  Although she doesn't have to do this with our home education, I do like her taking notes in church.    We've been practicing the personal shorthand lessons they taught, which is how a lot of people talk in their texting!

Again, I was given the Teacher Edition ($40) and Student Workbook ($20) to review.  These are spiral bound books, teacher edition has 82 pages and the student workbook has 65 pages.  There are some videos on their product page that will also explain the products.  If I were purchasing the Victus Study Skills System, I would probably just purchase the Student DIY Workbook to help save a little money on the Teacher Edition, but still work through the book with my child.
