Missionary Monday

I thought I'd share a little bit about where we live.  We live in the Northern Territory (also called the Top End), we are pretty secluded up here.  Darwin is the capital city of the NT with a population of about 128,000.  Although it is the most populated city in the NT, it is the least populous capital city in Australia.  The entire population of the NT is said to be 230,000.  Other large cities (or towns) are Alice Springs (Ayers Rock is located near here) and Katherine.


Because we are below the equator our seasons are opposite of the US.  We are currently going into fall.  We technically have two season here, the wet season (very hot and humid) and the dry season (lovely temps every day).  I'm told we're having a rare wet season.  It hasn't rained a whole lot (although it's pouring right now).  I've been told it rains most of January and February.  Looks like we may get caught up in March.  We are also known to get cyclones.  In 1974, Cyclone Tracey came through and wiped out most of Darwin.  We've had a few cyclone warnings since we've been here, but nothing happened.

We have Target (no Wal-Marts in Australia!), although it's nowhere near the size of those in the states.  Our grocery stores are Coles and Woolworths.  The grocery prices here are comparable to the states, although some things like a box of cereal and a candy bar is crazy expensive.  Gas prices are about $1.50 a liter, so about $6 a gallon.
