Friends...

I am so blessed with good, godly friends.

This is one of my dearest friends, Kristine.  Her and her family are missionaries in Indonesia.  Last year at this time we spent a week in Bali with them.  Also around this time 5 years ago is when we first met.  I am so thankful for friends who encourage me in my walk with Christ and make me want to be a better Christian.

KinderBach ~ TOS Crew Review

Kinderbach Review

We had our first review for Schoolhouse Review Crew!  We reviewed The KinderBach Online Piano Lesson Membership with Teacher CornerThis is a great, affordable online program for music theory and beginner piano lessons.  I used the program with Cody (he just turned 6).  To be honest at first, I thought he might not enjoy it, or that it may be a bit "babyish" for him, but he really enjoys it.

These were Cody's first piano lessons.  KinderBach is for children ages 3-7.  I would say that's the perfect ages for this.  It would be great for your pre-schooler or kindergartner.

KinderBach is a great introduction to the piano/keyboard.  It taught Cody familiarity of the piano,  the numbering of his fingers for playing the piano, he learned the difference between the high notes and low notes, he learned how to clap for timing, and much more.  I'm excited to continue using KinderBach and seeing how far he goes.

Here is how we used KinderBach.  We go to www.kinderbach.com (click here for a free trial) and sign in.  In the beginning I printed off the free activity and colouring pages that go along with the lessons, so we were prepared.  There are 4 lessons (videos) each week.  Some weeks we did more than the 4 lessons, as the videos are not too long, we haven't had any over 5 minutes, most are 2-3 minutes.  Some days we reviewed the previous lessons (not because we needed to learn it better, but because Cody wanted to!).   There are lesson plans to help the parent.  They don't require a lot of prep, which is great!  After signing in, we find the week and lesson we are on and watch the videos, and do a worksheet if one goes with the lesson.  It's quite simple, yet lots of fun.

What do you need to use the program?  A computer with good internet (there are also apps you can use instead of a computer), a piano or even small keyboard, crayons or markers, and a printer.

We have only used my laptop for the lessons, but I plan to download the app on our iPad and continue the lessons on there.  This will allow Cody to review lessons when I'm not around, since he's not allowed on my laptop by himself.

We really enjoyed using KinderBach.  Their website says (and I've heard this from other sources) that the best time to learn a language or begin playing a musical instrument is between the ages of 3 and 6.

Although I do play the piano, you do not need a musical background to teach this program to your child.

The program consists of 10 weeks worth of lessons (4 lessons each week).  The videos are short, and like I mentioned earlier somedays we would do several lessons at a time.  There are even certificates for each level completed!

My two little complaints, maybe it's just me, but the music was often louder than Ms. Karri's singing and I had a hard time making out the words, but maybe I'm getting old!  Also, the video quality when small was great, but when we enlarged it to fit the screen it would be a tad blurry.

Kinderbach Review

There is a 30 day money back guarantee.  There is a special, limited time offer of $95.88/year, that comes to $7.99 a month.  When we were living in Darwin, I was getting piano lessons for my daughter and they cost $15/half hour.  So this program is a bargain!  With this price you get online access to over 240 sessions, over 22 instructional hours (through computer, iPad, Kindle Fire, Nook, Android Tablet), you also have access to download the activity pages, as well as access to the Teachers Corner, and access to download story books, coloring pages, and song books.

So, all in all, I highly recommend this program for young children.  I do plan to continue using it with Cody through the end of our review period, and if all continues as well as it has we will purchase the 1 year subscription.

Cody's 6th Birthday!!

Seriously, where does the time go?  My baby turned 6 today, that's my warning for a weepy mommy post.  I love this kid so much, and it makes me a bit sad thinking another year has passed.  I tell him every year that this is his last birthday, no more growing for him.  I love just watching him play by himself, or watch him interact with people, or watch him when he doesn't think I'm around like at Scouts or at a friend's house.  He's a good kid, he still loves to give cuddles, he's a bit shy, and a bit more sensitive than his daddy would like, but I'm ok with that!

Today after his party, he asked me if we had any more presents for him.  I told him no, and that we gave him all his presents.  And he says, you're forgetting one, and he comes over and offers me his cheek to kiss.  He's always doing things like this.  Reminding me if I've forgotten to give him his good morning hug or bedtime hug.  When we're sitting on the couch he will snuggle up to whomever is closest and put his arm around them.

Today we had a little birthday party for him.  He loves Disney Planes, so we did a plane theme.  I had someone make his cake for me (what a stress reliever!).  The kids had a blast throwing water balloons, swimming in the pool, making paper airplanes, and then sitting and watching the Disney Planes movie.  It was a great afternoon.

Sigh.  Can I just freeze time?  I really do try to soak up every moment with my kids, but time is just flying by.  I just pray that they remember all the fun days like today, and forget all my messy mommy moments.

Spirit Week ~ My Favourite Missionary

Last week the Baptist Missionary Women Blog hosted spirit week for homeschoolers around the world.  It was fun to see everyone's pictures.  One day is was dress up like your favourite missionary.  I think my favourite missionary is Darlene Rose.

The morning that this was the day's theme, we were looking through our Bali scrapbook, and came across the above photo of my good friend, Kristine, who is a missionary in Indonesia.  She's a wonderful, godly lady, and I really couldn't ask for a better friend.  We met nearly 5 years ago when she was a pastor's wife at one of the churches we were visiting on deputation.  A little while after that the Lord called their family to Indonesia.  They resigned their church and left for deputation and have been in Indonesia for a year and a half now.  Last year we met them in Bali and spent a wonderful week with them.

So, when I saw this photo I knew it was the one we needed to recreate.  I think Autumn did a pretty good job.  I laugh every time I see this photo.  And by the way, I had permission from both of them to post this photo!

Why I Chose ACE For Our Homeschool Curriculum

As I mentioned here a few weeks ago, I was very reluctant to switch entirely to ACE for our homeschool curriculum.  I attended an ACE Christian school, and although I loved it, I have always felt my education was lacking.  I believe the school did the best that they could with what that had, but realistically, I was left on my own to learn, and sadly the score key was more of a teacher than the actual teachers were.  For example, only the pastor at the school knew Algebra, so when he was away, the supervisor (teacher) would stand at my desk with a score key "helping me".   After I graduated I attended Bible College, and again, I'm sorry to say, was a bit of a joke.  I look back at the papers I turned it and can't believe they passed them.  Our level of expectation and excellency in education is seriously lacking in Christian circles.  Sorry, but you know it's true.

I guess my main reasoning behind my reluctance was "what will other homeschool moms says?".   ACE doesn't have the best reputation.  As one blogger commented on a previous post, "Sometimes curriculum choices can feel like "keeping up with the joneses" when all we really need to do is keep up with our kids interests, abilities and processes."  Yes! Someone gets it!

After doing a great Bible Study last year, I was so convicted and overwhelmed with my sin of pride.  I didn't realize how much this was affecting different areas of my life.  One night while I was sitting here thinking and praying about what curriculum to use for the year, and tossing around the idea of using ACE then pushing the idea away, the Lord spoke to my heart, and I instantly knew that I was to swallow my pride and use ACE.

I thought I would share a list of my pros and cons to ACE.  Obviously, my pros are why I chose the curriculum.

Cons...
  • They aren't on par with other curriculum, so I've heard.
  • It's the lazy way out, so I've heard.
  • It's too easy to cheat.  (Don't ask me how I know.)
  • What will people say?

Pros...
  • The Scripture Memory Verse in every PACE.  They learn approximately 60 Bible verses each year.  I have a great amount of Bible verses memorized, and I attribute that to 12 years of doing PACE's.
  • The Character Traits taught in each PACE.
  • Finishing a PACE and getting a new one, rather than one large book for the entire year.
  • They have been revised and updated.
  • We have friends in our town that use the same curriculum.
  • We used ACE Math last year to help supplement because my daughter was struggling, and for her ACE explained the rules and instructions in a way that was easier for her to understand than Abeka.  (Which by the way, grade 5 ACE Math and grade 5 Abeka Math were teaching the same problems.)
  • My daughter wanted to use ACE.  And I value her preferences, opinions, and ideas.
Obviously, my cons list wasn't very long.  Overall, I feel ACE is a good match for us right now.  We are almost finished with week 4 and the kids are doing well.  I still sit with them at the table and am there when they need help.  I do all the scoring right now.  I plan to eventually have Autumn score her own work, but right now this is working for us.  I have decided to just take it year to year.  I am not sure if we will continue to use ACE through high school.  Maybe we will mix and match, we shall see!

Please know I am not saying ACE is for everyone.  Sometimes the homeschool community can be very judgmental.  We moms are doing our best for our kids, and we often get the "my way is the best way".  We get excited about a new curriculum we find and want to show it to others, but we need to remember the beauty of homeschooling is that we are individual families and need to make decisions that work best for our family.  And we need to be very careful not to pass judgement, even silent judgement, on the curriculum choices of others.

Thanks for letting me share, and thank you for all the positive comments and emails you all have sent regarding our curriculum choice!  Hope you all have a wonderful school year!

Homeschool Spirit Week!

http://baptistmissionarywomen.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/mk-spirit-week.html#.UvmwZqxWEeE

Today is crazy hat/hair day.

We found this hat when we moved into our new house.
Cody would not wear it today though!
So, here's an old photo of him wearing his hat.

And there's Autumn's crazy hair.

Go over to the Baptist Missionary Women Blog and join in the fun!

My Life Via Instagram

Instagram is a wonderful app.  Sadly though I rarely take photos with my good camera.
Anyway, here are some photos from last week...

I finally got around to hanging some pictures in our new (to us) home.  My grandparents had one like this hanging in their home, so I found it on ebay a few years back.  It's one of my favorites.

Autumn enjoys cooking.  I let her cook as much as possible, but she does make a big mess in the kitchen!  She likes to pretend she's on one of those cooking shows, she forgets they have a cleaning crew come in after them.  Last week she made these little chicken pot pies.  They were really good.

We have made a regular Skype date with her best friend in America, Katie.  She looks forward to Tuesday mornings!

Cody has started going to scouts.  His age group is called 'Joeys'.  He really enjoyed it, and Patrick is looking forward to the camping and hiking trips they have coming up.

We have gotten a lot of rain this wet season.  I love it!  This is the Katherine River.  The water level hit 13 meters last week.  In the dry season, I'm told the water level is around 4 meters.

Well, that's all for now.  If you would like to follow me on Instagram you can find me by searching - thebauerfamily.

Swimming Lessons

The kids started swimming lessons last week.
Cody loves the water.

Autumn has had lessons before, so she's learning to be a stronger swimmer.
